Renting a Kimono
Kimono is a traditional Japanese clothing people wear with various accessories. Japanese people generally wear it as formal wear and on special occasions with an obi belt. It is an important part of Japanese rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations. Female guests often wear kimono at both western and Shinto-style weddings.
There are 14 types (!) of Kimono depending on the occasions. For wedding, the parents of the bride or groom often wear black or any dark color kimono at their son or daughter’s wedding.
Overall, Houmongi is a popular choice since it is available for married and unmarried guest without age restriction. For unmarried guest who are in their 20s (gotta love Japan, lol), you can also choose Furisode.
For the guest, 3. Houmongi or 4. Furisode are relevant for you.
Depending on the type of Kimonos, they are usually quite expensive to buy. Since they also must be fitted properly and are somewhat difficult to put on, it is common for younger Japanese people to rent Kimono when needed.
If you are interested in wearing a kimono, it will be more convenient and timesaving to pre-order your rental kimono before arriving to Japan. There are many websites and rental shops online and on-site available in Japan, we can go with the online shop below where it offers a lot of options of kimonos.

Step 2: Arrange the rental and Payment
- Chiiya can book the rental for you online. When ordering, she will need to pay already. So you can either pay her with paypal or directly with cash in Japan.
- The rental price (incl. shipping) includes a full set of a kimono, accessories to put on kimono, a bag and Japanese sandals.
- Additionally, it is recommended to add the following options when renting:
- Adjustment towels (264 Yen): it is used to adjust the body figure.
- Insurance (1100 Yen): this covers for maintenance and repair costs for unforeseen stains and damages up to 27,500 yen (25,000 yen without tax).
- Please do not wear perfume. :) The smell cannot be removed properly; hence it is not covered in the insurance.
- Your kimono will be delivered directly to the venue 2 days before the wedding date.
Step 3: On the day of Wedding
- Since it is not possible to put on kimono by yourself, the wedding venue offers service to get you prepared. Here is the price for helping you wear kimono, and hair and makeup services if needed. For this service, you can directly pay at the venue on the day.
- Houmongi dressing: 11,000 Yen
- Furisode dressing: 13,200 Yen
- Hair: 7,700 Yen
- Makeup: 7,700 Yen
- You can also arrive at the venue with normal clothes and get ready there (including putting makeup and do your hair).
- Before wearing a kimono, make sure you are NOT wearing a bra. Kimonos are extremely supportive, and they’re also meant not to emphasize the chest. The juban (a type of under kimono) will shield you from any roughness from the kimono properly. If you must wear a bra, wear a sports bra under your juban. The ideal shape for a body wearing a kimono is a cylinder, like a kimono’s shape. Plus, any bras that lift your breasts will cause the kimono to sit poorly.
- Panties are allowed, of course, and ideally wear something lower. It is easier for you to use the restroom. A video guide on how to go to the restroom.
